Chp.25 - Judaism Is A Vain Boast In Abraham

“Those who justify themselves, and say they are sons of Abraham, shall be desirous even in a small degree to receive the inheritance along with [us] . . ." Justin Martyr. (1885). Buffalo, NY: Christian Literature Company. Justin is pointing to the fact that no one, not even the Jews, has justification as a son of Abraham. Abraham was blessed as a father of many nations, but only Christ is the spiritual Seed who has the power to give the justification of Life.

Galatians 3:15–18 (NKJV) 15 Brethren, I speak in the manner of men: Though it is only a man’s covenant, yet if it is confirmed, no one annuls or adds to it. 16 Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Christ. 17 And this I say, that the law, which was four hundred and thirty years later, cannot annul the covenant that was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it should make the promise of no effect. 18 For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no longer of promise; but God gave it to Abraham by promise. Though the law of circumcision, which was the sign of obedience to God through Abraham's covenant (vs.15), that is only a man's covenant, is annulled through Christ's obedience who was the promise of the covenant and the fulfillment of the law, the promise then remains to those who submit to Christ's covenant which is God's. What then is the sign of His everlasting covenant to the law's fulfillment? Matthew 3:13–17 (NKJV) 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?” 15 But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him. 16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Salvation has no boast in men or the covenants of men, but a believer's boast must be in the baptism of Christ who has saved His people from their sins. All boasting must be in Him, in this man's life, in this man's sacrifice, and in this man's resurrection from the dead. And most of all in this man's ascension to the right hand of Power in the Most High. Our boast must be in the exaltation and glorification of this man who was called Messiah. Chp.26 - There Is Salvation In No Other Name But Christ!
"And I replied, “I do not say so; but those who have persecuted and do persecute Christ, if they do not repent, shall not inherit anything on the holy mountain. But the Gentiles, who have believed on Him, and have repented of the sins which they have committed, they shall receive the inheritance along with the patriarchs and the prophets, and the just men who are descended from Jacob, even although they neither keep the Sabbath, nor are circumcised, nor observe the feasts. The mountain is the cross upon which Christ gave his earthly life to give heavenly life to his friends! Psalm 87:title–7 (NKJV) A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. Chp.27 - Why The Prophets Taught The Same Customs As Moses
"And Trypho said, “Why do you select and quote whatever you wish from the prophetic writings, but do not refer to those which expressly command the Sabbath to be observed? For Isaiah thus speaks: ‘If thou shalt turn away thy foot from the Sabbaths, so as not to do thy pleasure on the holy day, and shalt call the Sabbaths the holy delights of thy God; if thou shalt not lift thy foot to work, and shalt not speak a word from thine own mouth; then thou shalt trust in the Lord, and He shall cause thee to go up to the good things of the land; and He shall feed thee with the inheritance of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.’ ”7" Justin Martyr. "And I replied, “I have passed them by, my friends, not because such prophecies were contrary to me, but because you have understood, and do understand, that although God commands you by all the prophets to do the same things which He also commanded by Moses, it was on account of the hardness of your hearts, and your ingratitude towards Him, that He continually proclaims them, in order that, even in this way, if you repented, you might please Him, and neither sacrifice your children to demons, nor be partakers with thieves, nor lovers of gifts, nor hunters after revenge, nor fail in doing judgment for orphans, nor be inattentive to the justice due to the widow nor have your hands full of blood. ‘For the daughters of Zion have walked with a high neck, both sporting by winking with their eyes, and sweeping along their dresses.1 For they are all gone aside,’ He exclaims, ‘they are all become useless. There is none that understands, there is not so much as one. Or why did He not teach those—who are called righteous and pleasing to Him, who lived before Moses and Abraham, who were not circumcised in their foreskin, and observed no Sabbaths—to keep these institutions?”" Justin Martyr. Buffalo, NY: Christian Literature Company. I just can't think of many more ways to explain it any better than Justin. Again, Justin points back to what he already previously said concerning the Sabbaths and Circumcision. Is there really any more that needs to be said? One more reminder that the law was to expose the hardness of heart and nature of man, as Justin said, "I have passed them by, my friends, not because such prophecies were contrary to me, but" . . . and what he intends to convey is that like Israel they were contrary to him in that he did not possess the knowledge of Christ's righteousness for salvation. Romans 10:1–13 (NKJV) 1 Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. 2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. 5 For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of the law, “The man who does those things shall live by them.” 6 But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ down from above) 7 or, “ ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. 13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Paul points to the two forms of righteousness that Moses prophesied which made the law effectual for forgiveness when applied according to the whole counsel of the Law. The man who lives by the law shall die by the law, but the man who lives by faith, that is to say, a life of confession and pursuit of knowledge in truth, shall receive the mind of God. The legalistic approach was death, but the life of faith was the true Sabbath of God, which granted the knowledge of the Messiah. True rest is in Christ alone!
