After having peace and rest for about 40 years, what led Israel into the hands of Midian for seven years? (v.1, 25)

But again, what lies beneath all the obscurity that caused the fathers to forsake trusting the LORD'S promise? (v.36-40)
Since we are all pragmatists at heart, what made them begin sacrificing to Baal?
Was it because God was not sending the rain when they asked for it? Did God cease to bless them according to His promise when they obeyed the covenant?
Romans 10:1–11 (NKJV)
1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. 2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. 5 For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of the law, "The man who does those things shall live by them." 6 But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way, "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down from above) 7 or," 'Who will descend into the abyss?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? Why test the measure and quality of Israel's faith by withholding the means that will bring life to their labor?
John 3:1–3 (NKJV)
1 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him." 3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
Those who didn't live in the cities behind fortified walls were vulnerable to open attack. So the smaller and weaker villages were the first to fall under foreign invasion. But since Midian wasn't able to corner the inhabitants to box them in for the slaughter, they hid themselves in the mountains and caves. (v.2)
Hebrews 11:37–40 (NKJV)
37 They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented—38 of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth. 39 And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, 40 God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.
But every harvesting season for seven years, Israel's enemies joined forces to torment them by burning their fields of industry. (v.3-4)
So it was the enemy's sole strategy to force them to surrender the land back and leave for those seven years. (v.5)
But since all things work together for the good of those called according to God's image and purpose, the pride of Israel's idolatry was humbled and brought low to turn them once again to trust in the Almighty over all. (v.6-7)
Romans 8:28–30 (NKJV)
28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. 29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.
But the LORD sent them a prophet to lead them to true repentance. (v.9-10)

Crocodile tears are not going to move the LORD to defend Israel's honor when that honor has been serving false gods, which are not gods, which means the honor of their labor is worthless, lifeless, and unclean. (v.10)

Therefore they must learn to be motivated by God's glory above their own. (v.11)
Therefore why did God choose Gideon? (v.11)
Was he a valiant warrior hiding in a wine press sifting out the wheat? (v.12)
Or is it God's glory to make a weak man into a valiant warrior? (v.13)
2 Corinthians 12:7–10 (NKJV)

Why couldn't Gideon recognize the glory of the LORD in the face of the Angel, which was the pre-incarnate Christ? (v.14, 17)

For until this day, the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament because the veil is taken away in Christ. 15 But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. 16 Nevertheless, when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.
What is the LORD trying to show Gideon, that his strength is, now that the LORD is sending him? (v.16)
Is it miracles that the LORD wants him to trust in to know that Yahweh is with him? (v.15)

4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah." And He left them and departed.
Isn't that what led his father into the pragmatism of serving the Baals?
2 Thessalonians 2:6–12 (NKJV)
6 And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. 9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, 10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this reason, God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
Therefore isn't that why the LORD wants the army to go as one man, united by the same calling (image) and purpose in the Spirit of the LORD? (v.16, 34)

How does this question offend the holiness of God? (v.17)

How does the LORD demonstrate patience and grace with Gideon in spite of the offense by giving him the sign that demands obedience to the Law of the covenant to show that He is not just another unclean spirit? (v.18)

So, in reality, how is the LORD testing Gideon's knowledge and faith concerning what defines an acceptable sacrifice before the LORD to reveal Himself to Gideon? (v.19)

10 "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. 11 For by me your days will be multiplied, And years of life will be added to you. 12 If you are wise, you are wise for yourself, And if you scoff, you will bear it alone."
Therefore how does Yahweh, the Adoni, perfect the faith of Gideon's sacrifice since it did not measure up to the absolute standard of the tabernacle? (v.20-22)

How does this demonstrate the LORD giving Gideon the new birth while working with his weak faith to build him up into a valiant warrior (for the glory of the LORD)? (v.27)

How will this new disloyalty to Baal be tested by the threat assembled by the worshippers of Baal? (v.33)
Therefore how did the tearing down of the altar open Israel's eyes to their own bewitchment of Baal's deluding influence? (v.34)

Did their conversion to Baal in order to bring the elements of life to their labor keep the true worshipers of Baal from destroying their labor?
1 Corinthians 10:18–22 (NKJV)
18 Observe Israel after the flesh: Are not those who eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? 19 What am I saying then? But what is the weakness of Gideon that continues to cause him to stumble? (v.36)
Mark 9:23–24 (NKJV)
23 Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”
How is he demonstrating his self-centeredness by making this about himself rather than just forgetting himself through all this? (v.36)
Shouldn't he be joyful and motivated by the LORD receiving glory again? How does all this reveal our corrupt nature to trust in what we can see by choosing what works best through trial and error without any regard to what the LORD'S will is regarding the directions we take in life? (v.37-40)
